Gear list

Often a time-lapse shot will call for other equipment than the items in the categories below but your basic setup for time-lapse should include:

  1. A way to lock your camera angle and stabilize it long term via a tripod or securely on the ground. Wind is one of your biggest enemies with time-lapse but with enough weight attached to the tripod this interference can be avoided. I particularly like the Neewer tripod mounted sandbags they add nothing to your pack weight when hiking and materials from your environment can be added as weight such as your own pack or rocks when you reach your destination.
  2. A way to trigger your camera on a specified interval. This device is called an “intervalometer” and it will be specific to your DSLR model. Many DSLR’s have this feature built into its firmware and no external device is needed. More advanced intervalometers models can offer additional functionality such as day to night time-lapses or other advanced triggering methods.
  3. Battery capacity and storage to exceed the duration of your intended time-lapse. Having extra head room in these areas can ease the stress of having a time-lapse
  4. Lastly, software to assemble the series of pictures into a movie. I prefer Adobe Premire and After Effects but if you are looking for a free alternative here is one for Mac or PC: http://www.panolapse360.com/

Below is the camera gear I use for basic time-lapse setups. Any commission I earn from the affiliate item listed will help to further my craft and is greatly appreciated.
